Government surveillance amid COVID-19 may be long lasting, warns Snowden

Edward Snowden has warned that high-tech surveillance measures governments use to fight the outbreak of COVID-19, will have a long-lasting impact. Snowden said that governments can extend access to people’s personal information and use it to monitor their actions. ’They know what your heart rate is, what your pulse is. What happens when they start to intermix these and apply AI to it?’, he asked.

So many people misinformed about Snowden on here. He's an American hero, he warned the people the government is reading your texts, emails, listening to your phone calls, and able to track your every move. He risked imprisonment, death, and had to flee his country to help the American public. He's called a traitor by those that wanted to quietly invade your privacy, but I call him a patriot.

Why is noone here taking the real problem Snowden mentions seriously? We need to ensure that the rights law enforcement and government now has to monitor us is removed, so that they don't start to harass us. Police in the UK have followed a lone walker with a drone and harassed him, he was doing no-one any harm. People have been herded out of parks in the uk. We should be very careful that we don't lose our liberties after the crisis.

Let’s hate on the man who gave up his life at home to upbraid secrecy with the risk of government dehumanization.

How does Snowden have any relevant information? He’s not been in the US for nearly a decade and had access to, now outdated information. I side with him being such narcissist he has deep insight anyone cares about. Or, he’s really a traitor and gets intel from Russia to release to undermine the US.

You guys realize that every government will do this, right? This isn't about *just* America.

Leave it to government to use a disaster to their advantage. Hands off, I say! (In my mind I’m saying this in French, Le Miserables style.)

Get ready, China is preparing to slaughter all taiwanese and geostrategically invade Taiwan: https://freebeacon.com/national-security/chinas-secret-military-plan-invade-taiwan-2020/ Such an action MUST be stopped as it would signal the beggining of Chinas global military campaign. This is definitely an issue, but user Seekster brought up a really good point in one of their replies - Russia would use Snowden for disinformation campaigns if they get the chance. Although cyber spying is bad, look to China for what it should never become. The other thing people don't mention often is that Vladimir Putin was the head of KGB Foreign Intelligence for 16 years; think about that.

Same people crying about surveillance are the same people that are going to be crying about the lack of it when something happens.

Government overreach is a huge issue and needs to be taken seriously. I don’t think the coronavirus package includes provisions that allow the government to monitor ones heart rate and pulse however.
