Local news outlets suffer amid COVID-19 outbreak

As per reports, the toll of the COVID-19 on the news media could be worse than the 2008 financial crisis, which saw newspapers experience a 19% decline in revenue. Local newspapers, heavily dependent on ad revenues from business, in the US and Canada are unlikely to survive. Among the bigger names, BuzzFeed has instituted pay cuts.

There was a time when I was younger, that a journalist would consider it a professional and personal breach, if they in any way, revealed their personal political beliefs... These people are not newspeople , they are propagandists. Let US be truthfull.

No CNN & Buzzfeed. This is actually a time we could do without #fakeNews, biased tribalistic reporting, opinion passed off as fact & editorial disguised as reporting, constant snideness and hostility further eroding societal cohesion. Most definitely one of the silver linings of the pandemic #LearnToCode

The CNN link is confusing because this story is about Journalists. What on Earth does CNN have to do with Journalism?

These layoffs are a secondary effect as the businesses that buy the advertising that support the media are shuttered for an indeterminate amount of time.

Journalists being made redundant by their own business model. Interesting conundrum for the industry.

Coronavirus a “media extinction event?” Well deserved. I hope is a quick event. We’ll all be the better for it.

CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS and the New York Times wouldn’t be missed. Just saying.

Don't celebrate. Local news actually saves a city or state money by keeping an eye on government. They are the ones hit hardest.

If the business is sound and has proper leadership, and if it actually is providing a valuable service to the society that society needs and pays it to keep providing, it will survive. Austerity in buisness only sheds the dead skin or the leechers, that aren't fundamentally a necessary or value-providing business. (BuzzFeed is basically a bitching or propaganda business, so yeah.) We are in the times where eyes are all over the news. If even now these businesses are going out, then they had no chance or real value to begin with.

To the creators of this app: I and others will leave if you keep the totalitarianism going. I thought this app was not supposed to be about that. I made a reply to a post, but it is hidden until a moderator looks at it, even though it was tame, and in fact, just a restatement of what the person I was responding to said. Please don't think for a minute that this is the only app where your CUSTOMERS can get news. It WAS the freest, but we'll have to see about that going forward.

If you guys have nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all. If you don't like the news outlets then just don't read them. Why complain? Does it accomplish anything? No, of course it doesn't. All it does it makes you guys look foolish to not be informed. Please take your knuckle dragging selves back to your caves & let the grownups take care of everything. Cool, cupcake?
