US becomes first country to report 1,000+ Covid-19 deaths in single day

The US shattered the global record for daily deaths from the coronavirus pandemic, counting 1,169 new fatalities on Wednesday. The dramatic increase came despite 90% of the country being under lockdown – varying in severity and enforceability. The total number of deaths in the US has now surpassed 5,000, with nearly 250,000 cases.

These death tolls are slightly meaningless without an infection rate. The infection rate needs to account for underreported numbers AND locality. This makes these numbers useful for decision making. Local leaders should be deciding for themselves the needed measures. Areas with a long term low infection rate may be able to take different measures.

Sounds terrible. Just remember, 1,700 people in the U.S. die each day because of heart disease. In 3 or 4 months we will all forget about COVID-19. Heart disease will remain but never make a headline. Which is worse?

Aproximately 7500 people die everyday in the USA of various reasons - an accurate perspective is needed.
