Fed balance sheet increases to record $5.86 trillion

The Federal Reserve’s balance sheet expanded to a record $5.81T in the week ended April 1, an increase of $557B from the prior week, as the central bank continued purchases of Treasury and mortgage backed securities to help restore market order amid the pandemic. The Fed’s holdings of mortgage-backed securities increased to $1.46T from $1.38T, and Treasury holdings rose to $3.34T from $2.98T.
