Barr expands early release for inmates at prisons hard hit by coronavirus

AG William Barr has directed prison officials to immediately release a wide swath of vulnerable inmates at a number of federal facilities besieged by growing coronavirus cases. The new order expands on guidance Barr issued last week to the federal prison system, encouraging early release programs. Barr’s order comes after 5 inmates at FCI Oakdale 1 and two at FCI Elkton 1 died from COVID-19.

I don't get why we are releasing prisoners even if a bunch of inmates get sick there stuck in prison wouldn't it make more sense to keep them their than exposing them to the general public? Keep gaurds at home querentine allowing them only to come to and from work?

Is there any kind of selection on who will be released regarding the crime they are being incarcerated for? Or are we just letting murderers and violent crime offenders free?
