PM Modi calls for India to turn off lights for 9 minutes to mark COVID-19 fight

Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked India’s 1.3 billion citizens to observe 9 minutes without electricity on Sunday night and ’challenge the darkness’ of COVID-19 by lighting candles and lamps. Millions observed it. Critics dismissed the event as a stunt and a distraction. Mr Modi imposed a nationwide lockdown on March 25, announced with little warning, leaving millions stranded and without food.
