’Now is not the time’: WHO responds to Trump’s threat

Responding to President Trump’s threat to cut its funding, WHO said the move would not be appropriate during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. ’We are still in the acute phase of a pandemic so now is not the time to cut back on funding’, WHO Regional Director for Europe said. Trump said earlier he would ’put a hold’ on US contributions to WHO, saying it had given bad advice during the outbreak.

Now is the perfect time You failed when your job was most necessary, your test kits now leave us wondering if this virus can hit us a 2nd time or is it just too many false positives from bad test kits If anyone failed that bad at their job the only thought going on in their head walking into work the next day would be "I'm fired". What is the avg. Amount every country pays in? We pay that amount starting next year Nothing this year

It would seem more constructive to use our leverage to fix whatever flaws there are rather than withdrawing/undermining. It seems clear (and COVID only reinforces) that we need a global health body. I have not delved into it but it seem likely to me that WHO is doing their best in a very difficult situation with both extremely imperfect knowledge and political stresses. But, in any case, better to repair than tear down. And, in a crisis you do the best with what you have rather than trying fundamental restructuring.
