Ex-CDC head claims death toll in NY could have been cut by up to ’80 percent’

Thomas R. Frieden, the ex-head of the CDC, claims implementing social distancing measures 2 weeks earlier could have reduced NY’s death toll up to 80%. ’Taking steps such as closing schools, nonessential stores and restaurants could have reduced mortality between 50 and 80%,’ Frieden said. He said that both the city and the state implemented such measures several weeks after orders in major cities

Why is anyone worried and what could have been done when we're not even sure how much longer this shit will be going on?! Much more productive to spend time and energy dealing with the current reality, not hypothetical 'what if' scenarios.

So the modellers who incorrectly modelled their predictions several orders of magnitude over the actual are now modelling in hindsight under the actual? Interesting.

The West just isn't of the right mindset to instigate fast-moving social distancing measures. I'm in Madrid and it was exactly the same here. The lockdown came a week before the peak (the biggest numbers here happened between 26-30 March, the citywide lockdown came into effect on the 19th, that's MILES too late. 2 weeks before would've made a massive difference, so this guy isn't wrong. But that kind of rapid lockdown implementation was only possible in the Far East where epidemics have become a way of life. Everywhere else there is no comprehension nor are there established mechanisms for rapid lockdowns. So what we're seeing in NYC, Madrid, Lombardy, NOLA etc was always gonna happen sadly, especially with such a contagious virus.

Is it Trump to blame or the guy who told them they should continue to live their lives and that they should go to the gym because it's healthy to do so?

We haven't lost anyone due to a lack of hospital equipment/personnel, right? I think Gov. Cuomo said that this morning. We've saved everyone that could be saved so far. It's my understanding that getting the disease is pretty much a given for everyone eventually...and that all of these distancing efforts are simply to slow the spread so that we don't overwhelm hospitals. If we've been successful (so far) in that spread slowing...how would closing schools etc sooner have saved 80% of those people?

There's a difference between someone running to get reelected or someone worried about protecting the citizens of his country... Unlike Trump, the president of Ukraine - Zelenskiy and his Cabinet of Ministers were accused excessive quarantine measures of unnecessary steps that looked authoritarian. Yet Ukraine has less than 1500 people infected and only a couple of dozen that have died. Mr. Trump here's your sign!
