Global trade will plunge by up to a third in 2020 amid pandemic: WTO

Global trade growth, already hit by trade tensions and uncertainties around Brexit, is expected to plummet between 13 percent and 32 percent in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupts normal economic activity and life around the world, the WTO said on Wednesday. If the nations pull together, however, the world’s economy has the potential to bounce back in 2021, the intergovernmental body has said.

The actual prediction is a drop in global economic activity between 13-32%. The doom-and-gloom headline of 1/3rd does not serve anyone. The economic situation is going to be bad, but there’s no reason to sensationalize it. There’s also HOPE (pardon my Pollyanna moment) that things won’t be as bad as the worst case scenario.

Again I worry that the lives saved in the quarantine might be lost in the recession ( maybe a depression at this rate).
