Shoppers at grocery stores and food markets in DC must wear masks, says mayor

Muriel Bowser, the mayor of Washington, D.C., has directed all grocery stores and food markets in the city to ensure that their customers wear face masks before entering. Ms. Bowser released the order via Twitter on Wednesday night, and also held a press conference on Thursday to announce the same.

It seems unclear what qualifies as a mask in this case. This does seem effective though as the virus can be spread through aresolized dropplets from people coughing, sneezing, or even just talking loudly. Dropplets can hang in the air for up to 3 hours depending on ventilation. If I wear a mask unless it's rated to filter microscopic particles I could still be exposed. But if everyone wears even a piece of cloth over their face that could reduce the spread of dropplets. As long as the mask was somewhat fresh when entering the store and not soaked through and wet from prolonged wearing.
