Inmate at NY’s Rikers Island jail dies from coronavirus

An inmate at the Rikers Island jail in NY has died from COVID-19. He was in custody over a parole violation, since Feb. 28. It is believed the death could have been avoided if Governor Cuomo had directed respective department to release incarcerated who are especially vulnerable to the virus. 440 staff and 300 inmates at Rikers have tested positive for COVID-19.
