New York hires laborers for mass burials on Bronx island amid Covid-19 surge

New York City officials have hired contract laborers to bury the rising number of dead in its potter’s field on Hart Island, an area which has been used to bury those with no known next of kin since the 19th century. Typically, some 25 bodies are interred each week on the island. However, since March, about two dozen bodies are being buried a day, five days a week on the island.

Because these are identified remains... N many didn't live lives believing in cremation... Least can do is honor the so many who have died... Without causing greater pain to survivors n their beliefs.. It's not that don't want to claim their deceased loved ones.. It's can't in this moment... Many abrahamic religions do not believe in cremation.. Some it was important to have remains cared for in like seventy two hrs or less... This is super painful.. For the loved ones left to care cope n grieve n honor their dead... Me... Burn me crack a beer n party on... I am but a simple heathen.. But I get it... Placed many many in body bags n morgues...n u fast realize the loved ones just want to know their lost member was treated with great dignity n respect.. That's all they ask.... I wish damn news would cease showing body bags n sheet covered loved ones... It's hard on the morgue ppl... It's got to be devastating on ppl who can't get into see loved ones.. Thus adding to the anxiety of... Is. That my mom dad grandad gram mom.. Kid... It plain wrong n unethical n immoral
