World’s largest pork processor shuts down US plant, warns of meat shortages

Virginia-based Smithfield Foods announced Sunday that it is closing its pork processing plant in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, until further notice after hundreds of employees tested positive for the coronavirus. The world’s biggest pork processor also warned that the country was moving ’perilously close to the edge’ in supplies for grocers. The facility represents 4% to 5% of U.S. pork production.
