Apple, Google developing tech to aid in COVID-19 tracking

Apple and Google on Friday updated technical details of the COVID-19 contact tracing system they plan to release next month. The system will use Bluetooth technology to let authorities build apps to alert people who have been in proximity with those who have tested positive for the virus. The technology does not employ GPS location data and stores most sensitive data in a decentralized way.

Ummm... A certain quote comes to mind. Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety...

Why is Apple taking part in this? I’m not surprised Google is.

No. It’ll just be another civil liberty stripped away. Given we already have Orwellian levels of restrictions on free speech and companies tracing us all the time, this could just be another way to monitor us disguised as trying to help.

I am ok with this. To be told I have come close contact with an infected person is more helpful to me than worrying about some tech company knowing where I blipped up on my travels. I will be at home for the most part so its not a problem. What is everyone worried about in this situation?

Good. I'm sure it will never be used for anything other that covid tracking. Not like govt globally spy on their own citizens.

So many of you are idiots who do not read. It's BLUETOOTH based. Just switch that shit off! Who the hell strolls around with bluetooth constantly on? If you do, here's a tip: don't! Your battery will thank you.

Ummmm ok. I can’t see this going wrong in any way. Who is using every excuse to track us all under the disguise of “safety“? It’s getting ridiculous now.

I think people are over reacting just a bit, it is clearly saying that no personal info will be used so whats the problem, its a phone to phone notification service and overall help provide people with info with which they can make important decisions on in this crisis. I think we shouldnt jump to conclusions, innocent till proven guilty in a way

theoretically what they're trying to accomplish is possible but they also need the data sets from things like Amazon Uber Lyft Waze Facebook... Imagine if this is the way that China gets caught...
