Chloroquine study stopped after irregular heart beats detected

A study, involving 81 patients in Brazil, has been halted early after COVID-19 patients taking a higher dose of chloroquine developed irregular heart rates. Chloroquine is similar to the drug hydroxychloroquine that President Trump touted as a possible ’game changer’ in treating COVID-19. Researchers said the study provided further evidence that chloroquine can significantly harm some patients.

The headlines seem a bit misleading, even when disregarding the debate over the difference between chloroquine and its sister drug, as the study has not been halted. They merely stopped the high dosage arm of the study, with the low/regular dosage one still proceeding and seeking more patients/subjects. It would be fair to say that the study confirmed known risks for giving patients high dosages of the drug for an extended period of time, but beyond that info there is really nothing new here.
