China’s economy shrinks by 6.8% in first quarter; slowest in decades

China says its economy contracted 6.8% in the 1st quarter in its worst slump since at least the 1970s as the pandemic forced factories and businesses to close. Industrial production dropped 8.4% in the first quarter, while retail spending, which supplied 80% of economic growth last year, plunged 19%, and investment in factories and other fixed assets sank 16.1%.
