Almost 25,000 to be freed under Myanmar prisoner amnesty

Myanmar will release almost 25,000 prisoners, including 87 foreigners, in an amnesty to mark the traditional New Year, the president’s office said on Friday. No details of the crimes the prisoners were convicted of were given nor was it clarified whether the release was related to calls to free them because of the hazard of contracting COVID-19 in the close quarters of prison.
