French scientist investigate use of nicotine in Covid-19 treatment

Researches in France suspect nicotine could stop the virus from infecting cells or could prevent immune system from reacting. Hence researchers intend to provide Covid-19 patients in and out of ICU with nicotine patches. They would also test it on healthcare workers to analyse whether it can prevent the virus spread. However another recent study has found most infected were not regular smokers.

Please. If that were true Italy's older population would have been damned near immune, not ravaged. Not to mention China, France, and Russia would be nearly case free.

Why does the summary say "however" about most infected not being regular smokers if the statement agrees with the main idea?
