20 firms behind more than half of single-use plastic waste in the world

According to a new study, 20 petrochemical companies are responsible for 55% of the world’s single-use plastic waste. US energy giant ExxonMobil tops the list, contributing 5.9M metric tons to global plastic waste, closely followed by U.S. chemicals company Dow and China’s Sinopec. Australia and the US produce the greatest amounts of ’throwaway’ plastics, at more than 50 kgs per person per year.

One of the problems is that it isn't profitable to recycle many materials (such as plastic). It's part of the reason the US sends recyclables to China. Most companies aren't going to spend more for recycled goods and most people aren't going to, or can't afford to, spend extra for recycled goods. The people can reuse many single use plastic goods, but that plastic will eventually end up in landfill (or the ocean) in the end. It does nothing to change the problem of single use plastic.

While this is terrible to see, half of the blame rests on the consumers too. If you shamelessly buy from ExxonMobil, you can't then blame them for the consequential plastics. Stop buying plastic fellas, and stop buying chemical products that have a high plastic demand.
