1-in-7 Americans wouldn’t seek treatment for COVID-19 symptoms due to costs

As per a poll by Gallup and non-profit organization West Health, one in seven Americans would not seek medical if they developed a fever or dry cough because of concerns over costs. This translates to nearly 35 million people might avoiding seeing a doctor for the symptoms. 9% of people polled would avoid healthcare even when asked explicitly ’as believing they have been infected by’ COVID-19.

The vast majority will not seek medical help not because of cost, since anyone can go to the ER for treatment without paying a dime at that time, but because the symptoms are by and large extremely mild. Most people that have gotten covid never develop symptoms at all. If symptoms are serious enough there is not a single American that won't have access to healthcare. This is why we have not only the most effective healthcare system on the planet, but also the most resilient. This is why when they calculate death projections it would have been higher to compute them if America was on socialized medicine according to multiple sources that we use for modelling. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/03/20/fact-check-were-italians-left-die-socialized-medicine-blame-coronavirus/2887743001/ https://www.google.com/amp/s/fee.org/articles/if-american-healthcare-kills-european-healthcare-kills-more//amp https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/04/coronavirus-crisis-not-argument-single-payer-health-care/ This final link is a clinical study that goes into the links between out of pocket expenses, perceived access to care, and actual access to care. It basically shows that out of pocket expenses and perceived access to care are not intrinsically linked. Many of the countries with very low out of pocket costs also have abysmal access especially in times of health crisis due to rationing of care. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0168851015001700
