Deaf New Yorkers sue Cuomo for not having sign language interpreter at briefings

Disability Rights New York and 4 deaf residents filed a lawsuit against Gov. Andrew Cuomo Wednesday for not having American Sign Language interpreters at his live coronavirus press briefings. The suit argued Cuomo is in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 by preventing deaf New Yorkers from obtaining the information shared during the health crisis.

I always thought the asl interpreters were some courtesy service, to supplement closed captions, as I do not recall them being present at televised press conferences until just this past decade.

I really don't understand sign language interpretors. Wouldn't captions be much more effective?

I think it’s quite silly to be suing over small things during a pandemic. I mean between having briefings without a sign language interpreter and no briefing at all, I’d rather just have the briefings. I already wasn’t happy with many of the sign language activists. If some of you aren’t aware there are different college level courses that are free online. I like using them between semesters to get a rough idea of what I will be learning. These activists sued these free services because not every video was transcribed/offered closed captioning. Rather than transcribing thousands of lectures they all got purged. I definitely support people with various needs, but rather than suing and removing things activists should spend their time to help transcribe these videos and to spread knowledge.

PLEASE, grow up! This is a pandemic; someone who knew you were "deaf" could have made known to you what was happening and called his office to ask for what was needed?!!

People suing for non corona-shutdown related reasons. Remember when this is all we did? Things must be getting back to normal.

In this rare case, being deaf would be a darwinian advantage.
