Delhi Gov’t introduces 70% ’corona fee’ on alcohol to deter large crowds

To deter crowds gathering at liquor stores following the easing of a six-week lockdown, authorities in India’s capital on Delhi imposed a special tax of 70% on retail liquor purchases. In some instances, police baton-charged hundreds of people who had flocked to liquor shops when they opened. Following this, the state government announced the ’special corona fee’.

There are some things in life that are just pure, outright, straight-from-the-pit-of-hell evil, a 70% tax on booze is one of them. There’d be riots in the street if they tried that where I live.

“New Delhi’s tax is meant to discourage gatherings.” No, New Delhi’s tax is meant to generate money for the government officials. That’s what all tax is.

That's utterly insane! What? How is this even fair for the bar owners?!

This tax may well be abused by corrupt politicians...but personally I fell its okay to increase the price on booze especially when it is set only until COVID is resolved. It not like you will die without booze for a few months. As for the owners of bars hurting...well we all are hurting bare with it like every one else...

Looking at these comments I just realize how people enjoy exaggerating calling it tyranny when the intended motive was to discourage gathering making it far less possible for the virus to spread, anyways those who are ignorant tend to dislike it when they don't understand it, this scenario is an example to it. I believe this is going to be temporary as I know the government wouldn't dare to expand authority on alcohol since it isn't a human commodity unlike what these people who are treating it as if it's even necessary.
