A ’quiet’ black hole 1,000 light years from Earth can be seen with the naked eye

HR 6819, a star system 1,000 light years away has been identified as a ’quiet’ black hole - one that does not emit x-rays. Marianne Heida, from the European Southern Observatory said ’We think that the vast majority of black holes in the Milky Way are ’quiet’ black holes, maybe a hundred million in total, and we’ve only found about 100.’ HR 6819 is so close to Earth it can be seen by the naked eye

Before people freak out we are fine. Black Holes don't really impact things unless those things get too close. Even if a Black Hole was 10 light years away we probably wouldn't notice any effects save for some bending of light from stars behind it.

So a few questions: Is it Trump's fault? Did global warming cause it? Is Al Gore going to make us pay taxes for it?

Black Holes are a result of very large stars collapsing on itself, which means if we can see the black hole with the naked eye, the star it was dying from miiiiight have been visible from our solar system in it's dying days. That would have been a sight to see - again assuming anything was around to see it, let alone with enough capacity for curiosity.

The word close here is very relatively and being used very liberally.

For those of you who are curious or worried about it, don't be. Surprisingly close in interstellar terms is merely in the stellar neighborhood, which is roughly anywhere in between the solar system and ~2,000 to ~3,000 light-years depending on who you ask.

We shouldn't be worried about black holes. Closest Black holes are 1000 Light year far away, its not a small distance at all. We are surely out of any danger till now for sure.

The first sentence in the sky piece debunks the Newsvoice title: "...two companion stars swirling around it can be seen with the naked eye by people in the southern hemisphere...".
