Germany criminalizes burning of EU and other foreign flags

Germany has made public burning of the EU flag or that of another country punishable by up to three years in jail. The vote on Thursday makes defiling foreign flags equal to the crime of defiling the German flag, and is to be treated as a hate crime. The same applies for the EU anthem. The move followed complaints about protesters’ burning of the Israeli flag in Berlin in 2017.

This is basically saying "We're going to put you in jail if you don't respect the symbol of our unelected overlords". The German people should kick the current admin to the curb. There is never a good reason to abide by authoritarians in power.

I don't believe you should burn any country's flag, but burning the flag of an abomination like the EU's flag is okay. It's not a country, it's an ideological spider who treats the countries within it like flies stuck to the web. It's the same as burning the USSR or Nazi flag, even though they previously represented countries, they now represent only a political mindset and authoritarian rule. #BringBackSovereignNations

Sometimes we Americans fail to realize just how free our society is even compared to other western republics. Freedom of expression (including freedom of speech) should always be preserved to allow for the free exchange of ideas. People should be educated so they can differentiate between good and bad ideas themselves.

Lemme guess: authorities will exercice tolerance if Islamist radicals burn the USA flag?

Freedom of speech is not a thing in Europe, and definitely not in Germany. Flag burning - any flag, and any amount of burning - is speech.

I can't possibly imagine why Germans would have suddenly started to burn the Israeli flag. Truly a mystery......

So, it is not illegal to burn Nazi flag in Germany. That is part of wish list before I die.

Go authoritarianism. Not like we didn't know but it's blatant in this instance. Freedom comes with the ability to do such things, even if you seriously disagree with the act.

The EU flag represents all the nations within the EU. I noticed that many of the comments here are outraged by the illegality of burning an EU flag because it technically doesn’t represent one country, but the same things is kind of true for the United States of America. The Star Spangled Banner represents the states. The U.S., come to think of it, is essentially a more federalize EU in the light that the states all have their own governmental bodies and authority

While I understand burning foreign flags as equal to your own... I dont see how the EU flag could be considered an equal...

Let’s face it. There’s always been something deeply flawed, irrational and un-democratic about the Germans. So this is no surprise.

Even if something shouldn't be done, doesn't mean you should make it illegal. The law should be left for things like murder, otherwise you risk taking meaning away from the law.

You shouldn't be allowed to burn any flag other than Israel's, for old times sake.

It's not like they had freedom of speech before. Might as well keep chipping away at any shreds of liberty that may still be clinging to Germany's underbelly.

Flag burning isn't something I endorse but should people be free to do it. Banning people from expressions of any sort is a sign of authoritarian behaviour that I am vehemently opposed to.

As a German citizen I'm quite shocked about this new law, and even more shocked to find out that it's apparently already illegal to publicly destroy or damage the German flag. I really feel like burning some flags right now.
