Vice Media CEO slams Big Tech as ’great threat to journalism’

Vice Media is laying off around 155 employees globally as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to strain the media industry. CEO Nancy Dubuc, however, did not place the blame for this only on the pandemic, but instead slammed the Big Tech companies for taking the lion’s share of digital advertising growth. In a memo announcing layoffs, Dubuc wrote that ’Big Tech’ poses a ’great threat to journalism’.

I would suggest that had certain elements of the media not behaved in the way that they have and realised that roughly half of any population would be opposed to whatever partisan position they had taken upon themselves to peddle they wouldn’t be struggling and people would come to them for their news. They don’t come for news because all we get is opinions and propaganda.

The greatest threat to journalism are journalism schools. The teachers are telling student their first priority is to 'change the world'. They need to add, if you are going to change the world change it for the better by changing yourself first.

Meh, they were gaming the system before, and the platforms changed it up on them. They had to expect such a beneficial circumstance was temporary, and I hold little sympathy for people who used their own publishing platform to try and bully the tech companies into censoring their competition and ideological opponents.

The biggest threat to journalism is the lack of journalistic ethics in today's media. Start reporting the news not your opinion.

If they were honest, and didn't push propaganda, they would probably be thriving. Because they're so bad, the youtubers criticizing their content seem to be more successful.

How about they just write fair articles and news, let us decide instead of injecting nothing but opinions into the “news”?

Media needs to rehaul their revenue model in order to survive times like this. A revenue system largely based on advertisement earnings is likely to fall like a house of cards during periods of economic stress. Quality content valued by paying subscriber could provide more stability to media companies.

Vice, Vox, WaPo, NYT, CNN, MSNBC are dying. They adopted an agenda to appeal to the left, surrendered any modicum of journalistic integrity for, "eyeballs on the site." This form of jounalism can't burn to the ground fast enough and hopefully get replaced by something with more integrity.

Funny how Vice thinks what they do is journalism, pretty sure it is just propaganda and opinion pieces. Not just Vice, but CNN, MSNBC, Fox, ABC, CBS, MotherJones, etc. They can all Learn to Code . :D Be real nice if we could just get some factual journalism....

No surprise that there's so much ignorance in response to actually good journalism coming from Newsvoice's loudest commenters. Every time I've read a Vice article, they've been far above the typical quality of journalism you'd find anywhere else. It's typically equivalent to New York Times, etc. The commenters here complain about censorship, yet big tech companies that can control what ads they show is fine. I'm not partial to the cause, but the cognitive dissonance is ridiculous on here.

If vice had stuck to it's original format, they would be dominating the media stage, with loss of WikiLeaks, they would have been the only game in town

The real greatest threat to journalism is the kind of fake bs that vice, buzzfeed, etc. put out

You evil manipulators love big tech all the while it's censoring people you disagree with. But now you don't like it?

The problem is unfettered capitalism. Soon all "news" sources will be owned by six of the wealthiest people in the world. Oh, wait... That already happened... It's getting more difficult every day to find truth. A most precious commodity. Very low supply, but surprisingly not much demand for it either.
