Puerto Rico to hold statehood referendum after struggling to obtain relief

Puerto Ricans will go to the polls Nov. 3 to cast a non-binding vote on whether they want to become a full-fledged state, Gov Wanda Vazquez said. Puerto Rico is a US territory and, while its residents are US citizens, they cannot vote in presidential elections. Though the island is exempt from the federal income tax, it still pays local taxes and receives less federal funding than US states.

Bring in PR, fire California, no new flag, and everyone is happy.

It was a close thing last time. I think they may pass the referendum this time, given that they are stuck between a rock and a hard place with their debt and infrastructure issues.

They deserve statehood. Time for them to be made one.

Not a great time for another attempt, as even if the vote succeeds in Puerto Rico it will just become another partisan football in the US. Perhaps it would work better, if they setup bipartisan support first, and were not pitching it to their own people as just a better way to get US federal funds.

Great more debt for us to take on and more voters for the Democrats

Puerto Rico has become a white elephant, the U.S.A. It does not know what to do with the island it has become a nuisance to maintain it.

Can they become independent instead?

They deserve to become state after all that they sufdered through. First the hurricane, then Trump, and the earthquake.

Should be interesting.

Just let them be a state, already! They had multiple passing referenda already. Obviously, they want in.

Skeptic 4 months

They are American citizens subject to taxation without representation. The current situation is unjustifiable (notwithstanding that it has been over 100 years). They should either be a state or independent.

They need a in or out referendum and then the Senate needs to say no and boot them as a territory. Last thing we need is another debtor state on the roles
