US to invest $1.2bn to secure potential Covid-19 vaccine from AstraZeneca

The US govt has agreed to allocate AstraZeneca up to $1.2bn to secure the supply of a potential Covid-19 vaccine that could be ready as early as Oct. As per the deal, the govt will fund a 30,000-person vaccine trial in the US beginning in the summer, plus the ramp-up of manufacturing capacity to make at least 300mn doses. The first doses will be ready in the fall in case the vaccine is effective.
