UK lockdown saved no lives and may have cost them, Nobel Prize winner believes

The lockdown in the UK could have caused more deaths than it saved, Nobel laureate scientist, Michael Levitt, has claimed. Professor Levitt said that the modelling that caused the government to bring in the lockdown - carried out by Professor Neil Ferguson - over-estimated the death toll by ’10 or 12 times’, and suggested that the decision was motivated by ’panic’ rather than the best science.

The fact is there were plenty of very eminent scientists that were saying exactly this before the government took the most damaging decision to liberty and livelihood in British history. These people just were not listened to. The scientist that was listened to has an appalling track record over Swine Flu, Foot and Mouth and Bird Flu. His models have been consistently wrong over many years and it was irresponsible and reckless of the Government to panic over his ridiculous prediction. These people seek power to make momentous decisions such as this and they made the wrong one. I think they did so in good faith but the inquiry into this disaster must identify that a mistake was made, otherwise nothing will stand in the way of this being visited on the population again

And when you're a politician and a trusted scientist tell you that you're about to kill half a million people, how the hell can you tell what is good or bad science? I believe the government acted properly on the evidence to hand. If the science was junk then we need to ask why the scientific advisors were spewing out junk science. But equally there were all sorts of opinions out around then and we also have to ask the question if these people are saying "I was right, ha!" because they resented not being listen to. We still don't know what the right course of action is or was. This guy really should know better than to criticise like this before the facts are known. I think he is just pissed off that the government didn't listen to him and he's blurting out "told you so!" He may end up being right, but the facts and analysis are not in yet for him to make these conclusions. He is, therefore, a prick who isn't helping.
