Boston Marathon canceled for first time in its 124-year history

The Boston Marathon has been canceled for the first time in its 124-year history due to the pandemic, organizers announced Thursday. The race had already been postponed from 20 April to 14 September. The marathon, which draws a field of 30,000, will now be replaced by a virtual event in which participants who verify that they ran 26.2 miles on their own will receive their finisher’s medal.
