Hong Kong’s Tiananmen Square vigil banned for 1st time as China cracks down

For the first time in three decades, Hong Kong barred this year’s mass commemoration, as it would violate the coronavirus lockdown measures prohibiting gatherings of more than eight people. There was no gathering of people on Thursday holding candles to mark China’s drastic June 4, 1989 military crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing’s Tian’anmen Square.
