D.C. mayor throws weight behind statehood of District

Muriel Bowser, the mayor of Washington, D.C. said on Thursday that the federal government’s response to recently held protests in the city has made the demand of statehood for the District justifiable. Addressing a press conference, Ms. Bowser said that the 700,000 tax paying citizens of the District do not have full autonomy and full representation in the Congress.

The District of Columbia cannot be a state because then that would mean the Federal Government would have to follow DC state laws which it cannot do.
