Black Lives Matter protesters march through Tokyo

Thousands of protesters in Tokyo took part in a Black Lives Matter march on Sunday in solidarity with the movement in the US and to call out Japan’s own problems with race. ’In Japan, there are far-right people who discriminate against other races. And Koreans and Chinese in Japan are exposed to a lot of hate speech,’ said Naho Ida. ’These things must not be allowed and we need to oppose this.’

lol, considering Japan is one of the most racist cultures in the world, this is intensely entertaining. They may be polite about their racism, but they don't like outsiders unless they're tourists. The moment you decide to live there, they ain't having it.

As an foreigner living in Japan, this is just a small group of political activists. What is important however is the public demonstrations... Anyone who puts out a strong political opinion publicly like this loses face. It is true that Chinese, Korans, and Africans get treated like dirt here. Chinese and Koreans are treated with general disdain, and Africans are actually prohibited from working outside of certain industries. The trouble is though, with exception to the racist prohibition of certain work against the Africans, there is very little "structural" racism. IE, there aren't racist laws etc. The racism is social. People individually choosing to judge others based on where they're born. So there's not much the Government can do about it without dictating people's personal relationships to them. There are also very little workers rights over here. I would like to see this change, but again, this is not racist as it applies to everyone.

Are there any black people in Japan? This is appropriation. Japan, get your own cultural crisis to march over.
