Rick Santorum fired from CNN after Native American remarks

Senior political advisor, Rick Santorum, was fired by CNN after remarks he made about Native Americans at a Young Americans Foundation event. He said during his talk, ’We came here and created a blank slate, We birthed a nation from nothing. I mean, there was nothing here. I mean, yes we have Native Americans, but candidly there isn’t much Native American culture in American culture.’

'We birthed a nation from nothing. I mean, there was nothing here,' Santorum told students. 'I mean, yes, we have Native Americans, but candidly, there isn't much Native American culture in American culture.' I can understand thinking there is probably a more nuanced take to such a statement, yet how is it 'racist' or terribly controversial?

Be sure to keep your political activists that pose as "news" anchors! A guy who's brother is a huge political figure would never be bias lol. Your station is laughable. Nothing news about it. One sided communist propaganda only

He said nothing, then not much. Technically he's correct. European developed from greek and Roman. Russia was developed from Viking invaders. most developement comes from organization and trade. Native Americans did not have complicated networks of trade or organization. It doesn't mean it's bad they just didn't. They tended to be tribes of independent people. I'm part native American. I don't feel bad about it. I don't feel sorry for anyone that that working for CNN is legit journalism.

And yet they still have Cuomo, Aminpour, and a host of lying reporters/contributers.

Good thing our forefathers weren't as thin skinned as some of these clowns . We'd still be renting tee pees from the natives . Unbelievable !

It was a strange decision to talk dismissively about Native Americans. You can talk up America without attacking another group.

Y'all in the comments need to look up the Iroquois confederacy. A complicated intertribal polity that helped inspire the constitution.

As a senior political advisor he's a waste of time if he can utter crap like that.

Not only was it culturally insensitive, it was factually incorrect. We didn’t come from “nothing”, we built our nation upon the backs of the native Americans and with the blood of slaves. If we’re going to move forward as “one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”, we have to begin actually including every demographic and culture in our political processes. What Santorum said/implied was the opposite of what America should stand for.

Technically he isnt lying and by todays standards even if we did try to incorporate some of our native American traditions into our very own culture it would be seen as cultural appropriation and get shut down. For some weird reason if you ever try to celebrate someones heritage even if its your own then you get cancelled, called a racist and told on every platform how evil of a person you are. Oddly enough its only the left that makes these accusations. At least in the Times ive been accused of or heard others accused of it.

What did he say that was so controversial? There were no cities, empires, armies, etc. New Spain is what that looks like, when a colony is founded by military conflict against a pre existing civilization. Semi nomadic hunter gatherers with limited agriculture are not a civilization; Nothing is a strong word, hyperbolic sure, but it's not fundementally inaccurate. There isn't a whole lot of Aztec culture in Mexico, and they were a flipping empire.

Is Santorum technically wrong? Yes. Can an argument be made that he is practically correct though not technically correct? Yes. Could he have chosen his words better? Yes.

American Indians hadn't even invented the wheel when Europeans got here. They were stone age at best. They didn't contribute much if anything to the US except naming places. That's just reality. Not saying they're worthless people but let's be honest here for once
