German minister, on Trump’s troop pullout plan, says security not a commodity

German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer said Tuesday that security is not a commodity to be traded in reaction to President Trump’s plans to cut the number of US troops in Germany. She said that ’NATO is founded on solidarity, on trust. And it is based on common values’. Trump on Monday had accused Germany of being ’delinquent’ in its payments to the NATO while confirming his decision.

Germany is one of the worst offenders but they are not alone in Europe in their lack of investment in security and defence to a reasonable standard. All of Europe relies heavily on U.S. military support regardless the founding principles of NATO. As a Brit I am proud my country pays it’s way and does it’s bit but I am in no doubt that the greatest burden in commitment of lives and money to achieve security is carried by the U.S. Trump is asking others to pay their share and their response is to turn his reasonable request into an ideological, highly politicised debate about what is NATO. This is why the EU fails in a crisis - because it doesn’t recognise when there is one.
