UK retail sales jump 12% as lockdown eases and shops begin to reopen

Retail sales in UK jumped 12% in May, driven by DIY stores and garden centres reopening amid the lockdown. Sales were boosted by a 42% rise at household goods stores, such as hardware, furniture and paint shops. But the hike was still down 13.1% on February before the full impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was felt. Online sales surged from 30.8% of all retail sales in April to 33.4% in May.
