China’s controversial dog meat festival opens

China’s dog meat festival has kicked off despite pushes from the government to improve animal welfare for health reasons. Thousands typically flock to the 10-day festival in the southwestern city of Yulin. While the recently introduced law banning the consumption and trade of wildlife does not apply to dog meat, the cities of Shenzhen and Zhuhai banned the consumption of dogs in April.

It is predominantly in the very poorest regions of China where this takes place - and it IS very horrorific. The more affluent areas of China think of dogs as pets only, and do not want others eating them.
