Christopher Columbus statue taken down in Columbus, Ohio

Columbus, Ohio, removed a statue of its namesake, Christopher Columbus, from outside its City Hall on Wednesday morning amid renewed criticism over the legacy of the explorer. Mayor Andrew Ginther had announced last month that the statue would be coming down as it doesn’t represent the city’s values. In recent years, Columbus’ name has become linked to the violent colonization of Native Americans.

"For many people in our community, the statue represents patriarchy, oppression and divisiveness. That does not represent our great city, and we will no longer live in the shadow of our ugly past," What about the many people who see the statue as representing exploration, heritage, or an objectively important moment in history? Also, whether you choose to live in the past is up to you, as not everyone is incapable of seeing all the achievements made and the potential of even more to come.
