UK grants asylum to ex-consulate worker ’tortured in China’

An ex-employee of the UK’s Hong Kong consulate who alleged he was tortured in China has been granted political asylum in Britain. Hong Kong-born Simon Cheng, 29, had fled the territory after being detained for 15 days while he was on a business trip to China. He was charged for inciting political unrest in HK last August. He denied the charges and said his confession was obtained under duress.
