Croatia to hold parliamentary vote amid economic, COVID-19 uncertainties

Croatians are set to vote on Sunday to choose a government. The centre-right Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), led by the incumbent PM Andrej Plenkovic, believes it can re-emerge as the biggest party with the strongest chance to lead a coalition. A recent opinion poll gave the Plenkovic’s party 27% of the vote, just ahead of the main opposition Social Democrats (SDP) at 25%.

"The country's current conservative government, which initially handled the public health crisis relatively successfully, has sought continued support from voters. But polls have suggested a liberal coalition has a slight lead over the ruling Croatian Democratic Union." This shows how complex the current COVID crisis is. Merely handling the crisis successfully is not going to convince voters. An able government must also look at the economy, and ensure that people have food to eat and money in their banks, while also dealing with the crisis. Clearly, voters are asking for more from their governments, and rightfully so.
