Australia warns citizens of ’arbitrary detention’ risk in China

Australia warned its citizens that they may be at risk of arbitrary detention in China. The travel advice includes the warning, ’Authorities have detained foreigners because they’re ’endangering national security’’. This comes as diplomatic relations between Australia and top trading partner China have strained after Canberra called for an inquiry into the source and spread of the COVID-19.

Australia and China have been at loggerheads with each other for a while now. An increased hostility towards Chinese interests by the Australians might signal a power shift in the Indo-Pacific in favor of the 'Quad'. However, given the fact that Scott Morrison is not liked by a lot of Australians, and the country might just get a new PM soon, who knows if Australia's current hardball policy towards China will continue.
