Hong Kong police granted sweeping security surveillance powers

Hong Kong police have been granted vastly expanded powers that allow them to conduct warrantless raids and intercept communications-- as well as issue internet takedown notices -- under the new national security law. Police have also been granted powers to apply for a warrant to demand suspected violators surrender their travel documents in order to restrict them from leaving the territory.

“Compared with the national security laws of other countries, it is a rather mild law. Its scope is not as broad as that in other countries and even China”, city leader Carrie Lam said.
