Smog causes an estimated 49,000 deaths in Beijing, Shanghai in 2020

As per a newly launched ’clean air counter’ launched by environmental groups, air pollution has caused an estimated 49,000 deaths and $23 billion in economic losses in the Chinese cities of Beijing and Shanghai since Jan. 1, 2020. The tool measures smog in 28 major cities worldwide. Measured on per capita basis, New Delhi, India, suffered the most from pollution, losing an estimated 25,000 lives.

Hopefully, no one is going to use this statistic to justify that more people have died of smog so far than COVID-19 in order to make the pandemic seem like less of a crisis and more of a hoax.
