UK GDP edges up 1.8% in May; far slower than expected

The UK’s economy rebounded more slowly than expected in May, growing just 1.8% from the previous month, dampening hopes that the recovery from one of the country’s deepest recessions in centuries will be rapid. Manufacturing and house building showed signs of recovery in May as some firms saw staff return to work. The rise came after a 20.3% drop in April and a 6.9% contraction in March.
