Americans rush to buy guns, shows FBI data

According to the FBI, 3.9M background checks (the key barometer of gun sales) were conducted in June. The previous record came in March with 3.7M checks. Halfway through 2020, just over 19M checks have been done. While firearm sales traditionally increase during presidential election years on fears that the next president could restrict gun owner rights, recent protests have triggered sales.

Some data from the articles Illinois registered the highest number of background checks last month, with 706,404. That state was followed by Kentucky (395,188), Texas (227,232), and Florida (210,415). California rounded out the top five background checks with 158,349. By comparison, Washington, D.C., had 897 for the month of June, while Hawaii tallied 1,660 background checks and Vermont had 4,920, according to the FBI data.
