World population could peak decades ahead of UN forecast, study asserts

Declining fertility rate and greying population will push the global population to peak at 9.7bn by 2064 — nearly 4 decades ahead of the time predicted by the UN, and decline to 8.8bn by 2100, said a study published in Lancet. It says populations in 23 countries, including Japan, Spain and Italy, are forecast to decline by more than half, with another 34 countries seeing a drop of more than 25%.
