Trump calls for Confederate flag to be protected under First Amendment

Despite the intense backlash that the Confederate flag is facing in the wake of recent nationwide protests on systemic racism and police brutalities, President Donald Trump maintained that the symbol ought to be protected under the First Amendment and should be treated as ’freedom of speech’. He further said that people who like the flag do not necessarily like slavery.

Freedom of speech does not give someone the right to try and bully or threaten people. Looking back at some of the protests regarding the virus lockdowns and you see nuts waiving guns around, holding the confederate flag, and in a couple of cases holding nooses. That should not be acceptable as free speech, that is just instilling fear.

“I just think it’s freedom of speech, whether it’s freedom of speech, whether it’s Confederate flags or Black Lives Matter or anything else you want to talk about,” he said. “It’s freedom of speech.”
