Oil companies including Exxon set first joint carbon target

A group of the world’s top oil companies, including Saudi Aramco, China’s CNPC and Exxon Mobil, have for the first time agreed to cut their greenhouse gas emissions as a proportion of their output, owing to the mounting pressure on the sector’s climate stance. However the target, set by the 12 members of the Oil & Gas Climate Initiative, permits absolute emissions to increase as production rises.
