Three French police charged over chokehold death

Three French police officers have been charged with manslaughter over the death of a delivery man in Paris who was put in a chokehold during an arrest in Jan. Cédric Chouviat, 42, was held down while still wearing his helmet for about 20 seconds. He died two days later in hospital of asphyxia and a broken larynx. France banned chokeholds in June but backtracked after a backlash by police.

People need to distinguish between chokeholds. Air chokes, as was clearly applied here due to the crushed larynx, are dangerous and should rightly be banned. Blood chokes on the other hand are incredible safe and can be used to very quickly subdue a suspect with minimal risk to both parties. Police should be well trained on the difference, and should even be encouraged to use blood chokes over any other less than lethal approach whenever the situation allows.
