Supreme Court green lights second federal execution

The Supreme Court on Thursday cleared the way for a second federal execution. The vote to allow the execution of Wesley Ira Purkey to go forward was 5-4. Purkey was convicted of kidnapping, raping and killing 16-year-old Jennifer Long in 1998 before dismembering, burning and then dumping the body. The execution had been halted Wednesday citing Purkey’s mental health.
