Lebanon’s elite dump Ethiopian maids on embassy doorsteps as COVID-19 hits

Dozens of Ethiopian maids have been dumped outside the Ethiopian embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, by employers who can no longer afford to pay their salaries amid the COVID-19 pandemic. There are around 250,000 migrant workers in Lebanon, and the country’s labor laws offer little protection for them. Ethiopia accounts for the biggest percentage of migrant workers in the country.

One thing to note particularly is that these maids fall outside the ambit of the Lebanese Labour laws. Instead, they are under a 'kafala' system which binds them to a particular employer who sets their working conditions outside the labour laws. If anything, this crisis should create the need for dismantling this system.

This is bloody sad! Some of these women have young kids to support. Praying for these women.
